This past week, locally grown produce from William Shelton’s Family Farms of Whittier, N.C.was available for the FIRST time in the Market at 609 Mill St. (Back Street) at the Spring St. traffic light. William brought a colorful assortment of Hydroponic lettuce that included Red, Oak, and Leaf, along with some beautiful Arugula; all for only $1.00 a bunch. Mustang Parade in downtown Sylva on Friday

The Smoky Mountain Mustang Boys are headed to the Greensboro Coliseum on Friday, March 5th for the Western 2-A Regional Basketball Championship. The team bus will leave Smoky Mountain High School at 12:30 pm on Friday and proceed down Hwy. 107 to Mill Street, turn onto Main Street, go through downtown Sylva and then back to Business 23 (by McDonalds) and out to Hwy 74. There will be a police escort for the bus. Let’s help support our hometown team and cheer on the Mustangs to victory!

Put up a poster or sign in your window, wear your Mustang Blue, tie a Mustang Blue ribbon on your door (call Ray’s florist, 586-5830, to purchase a ribbon for $8.50), and come out of your business and cheer them on as the team bus passes by. Let’s make sure our Mustang Boys know that they are supported by the Jackson County business community. If your business is not located along the parade route, we would love to have you join us in the front yard of the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street in downtown Sylva around 12:30 p.m. on Friday. If you can’t make it to Greensboro for the game, you can listen to all the action on WRGC radio starting at 8:15 p.m. on Friday night.

Great Food, Great Books, Great Beer

Join Spring Street Cafe, City Lights Bookstore and Heinzelmannchen Brewery to celebrate The reopening of Spring Street, new ownership of City Lights, and the new cookbook by Heinzelmannchen Brewery this Thursday, February 25th, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Sylva’s Heinzelmannchen Brewery has produced a new cookbook featuring dozens of recipes made with Heinzelmannchen beer. The event at City City Lights will be a celebration of its publication and a chance for the public to taste some of the items included.

Beginning at 6:00 p.m. enjoy great food from Spring Street Cafe, made with Heinzelmannchen Beer. Spring Street will be highlighting selections from their menu that are made with Heinzelmannchen beer and suggesting beer pairings with their menu items. Heinzelmannchen will prepare tasting items from the cookbook, entitled Your Gnometown Cookbook, to be available upstairs during heir “book party” beginning at 6:30 p.m. In addition, anyone who brings in a purchased copy of the book to Spring Street that evening will receive a discount on dinner on the night of February 25th.

Library Staff Seeks Media Preferences from Patrons

The square footage in the new Jackson County Public Library Complex will be increased from the current 6,400 to 26,000. Because of the increase in size, the library will have more room for expanded collections.

The library staff would like to know what the patrons want in these new media collections – books, DVDs, Books on Tape, etc. Three surveys have been designed to gather this information from all age groups. The adult, teen, and children’s surveys are available online at the Friends of the Library’s website, fojcml.org, and the library’s website, fontanalib.org/Sylva. The process is simple. Go to either of these websites, click on the survey that’s appropriate, and fill in your choices. It only takes a few minutes.

The surveys are also available in hard copy at the Jackson County Public Library, the Friends of the Library Used Bookstore, City Lights Bookstore and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. The information contained in the completed surveys will be entered with the online data.

The goal is have as many library patrons as possible respond to these surveys, either online or with paper versions. Having this knowledge about patron preferences will help the staff make informed decisions when ordering the new materials. The surveys will be available for a limited amount of time, so patrons are asked to give the staff their opinions as soon as possible.

Father Daughter Dance

The 3rd annual Father Daughter Dance sponsored by the Downtown Sylva Association was a huge success despite the threatening weekend weather. More than 100 girls enjoyed a special evening dancing the night away with their fathers. It was great to see the increased number of fathers and daughters that came out Friday. Our couples enjoyed yummy treats, drinks and door prizes from a number of local businesses. Thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors that made this event successful. We look forward to the 4th annual dance in 2011.
