The 15th annual Greening Up the Mountains festival will be held Saturday, April 28, 2012, on Main and Mill Streets in historic downtown Sylva. A project of the Downtown Sylva Association, this is Jackson County’s largest annual event. The event is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and draws approximately 10,000 to 12,000 visitors each year. This annual spring festival, named for the way the “spring green” creeps up the mountainsides, began as a celebration of Earth Day and has now evolved into a celebration of our local economy, sustainability, and traditional heritage crafts. Three full music stages will feature Jackson County bands, children’s performances, and heritage dance, along with the annual Youth Talent Show and more. Children’s activities include storytelling, face painting, an inflatable slide, the recycled materials Superhero Costume Contest, volunteer projects and more. This year’s event also hosts the annual Greening Up the Mountains 5K Run, sponsored by the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department, and for the first time ever, a cornhole tournament which will raise funds for local charities. Vendor applications are still being accepted. Each year’s event centers around the theme of supporting local businesses, providers and residents as the best way to create a sustainable economy, and invites demonstrations, booths and educational displays from environmental groups, “green” initiatives and those focused on learning and sustaining traditional mountain crafts and arts. Local businesses and nonprofit groups are encouraged to utilize the festival as a way to build support in the community. Last year, vendor spots were sold out quickly, so complete your application soon! Applications will be accepted through April 15, but space is limited, and early registration offers a reduced application fee. This year’s sponsorship packages have been redesigned to encourage participation from small local businesses who want to maximize their advertising dollars and support the economic benefits realized by such an event. Sponsorships are being accepted through April 15. Vendor applications, sponsorship forms, 5K registration forms, talent show registration forms are all available on the DSA website at www.downtownsylva.org. Printed forms may also be picked up at the Town of Sylva offices, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, and Signature Brew Coffee, all in downtown Sylva. For more information, please contact the event coordinator at greeningupthemountains@gmail.com or 828-586-1577 .

The Jackson County Public Library will host a daytime music program on the first Friday of every month, beginning Friday, November 4th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featuring the “The Lady and the Old Timers Band.”

The monthly performance by the band enables people who may not want to venture out at night to hear live music from local musicians. The Lady and the Old Timers Band is composed of one lady and 7 self–described old timers, 5 of whom are over the age of 80. They play gospel and traditional country tunes. Members include vocalist Delia Sears along with Fred Kirkland, Jim Hite, and Jim Brown on guitar; Carl Sears on bass; “Wild Bill” Jackson on harmonica; Robert Bradley on mandolin; and Roy Ramsey on dobro.

The group will play from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and looks forward to meeting Jackson County fans. The band plays regularly at the Macon County Library, but the First Fridays concerts will be their first regular Jackson County appearance.

For more information, please call the Jackson County Public Library at 586-2016. This program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Jackson County Public Library.
