Ron Rash to Read from New Collection of Poetry
Posted August 25th, 2011

With his first poetry book in nearly ten years, Ron Rash will visit City Lights Bookstore to read from his new collection, Waking, Sunday, August 28th at 1 p.m. This is a book  full of sorrow and redemption, sparseness and the beauty of a single stark detail–the muskellunge at first light, a barn choked with curing tobacco, a porch full of men and the rockers that move them over the same spot until they carve their names into the ground, deeper, even into the roots where myths start, into the very marrow of the world.

To reserve a copy call us at 828-586-9499 or visit us at our webstore at http://www.citylightsnc.com/

The Jackson County Farmer Market in downtown Sylva will hold a special even this Saturday August 27th from 9 to 12. We are having our annual Taste of the Market to show our appreciation for our customers new and established. There will be a variety of fresh foods to sample along with tasty recipes for quick preparation and plenty of ideas. There will be cooking demonstrations starting at 10 and the extension center will be there to answer a variety of questions that you may have from food and nutrition to gardening and horticulture. We are also raising money for the Community Table with a tomato taste-test! Find your favorite tomato from a variety and make a donation to the one of your choice and then make a sandwich. Annie’s will be providing the bread and we will provide the mayonnaise. Live music will be performed by vendors and friends and there will be games for the children. If you’ve never been to the local farmers market, come by and enjoy tasty delights, find gift items, and stock up on your weekly grocery needs while spending time with your neighbors. The next Second Sunday Contra Dance will be on Sunday, August 14. The dance will be held at the Bridge Park Pavilion on Railroad Avenue next to the municipal parking lot in Sylva.

All dances are done to live music and local musicians are invited to sit in with the band, to jam and learn how to play music for dancing.
The dance is free. Participants are encouraged to make a contribution toward the cost of renting the hall.
No previous experience with contra dancing is required and all dances will be taught and walked through before dancing. There will also be a short beginners’ workshop at the start of the dance.  No partner is required.
Contra dancing is a form of English country dancing that has become very popular with people of all ages during the last twenty years. It uses many of the same figures as square dancing such as circles, stars and swings.

Young Adult Literature Panel Discussion and Book Signing
Posted August 1st, 2011

Young Adult authors, Beth Revis, Myra McEntire and Victoria Schwab will be at
City Lights Bookstore Saturday, August 6th at 1 p.m. for a presentation of
their books and a panel discussion of Young Adult literature.  City Lights
donated each of the authors’ books as gift to the Jackson County Library
Complex.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis
Told in alternating points of view, Across the Universe is part science
fiction, part thriller, and part mystery with a touch of surprise taking the
reader on a journey that spans time, space, love, and life. I couldn’t read
fast enough to discover what happens, and this is only the beginning. This
book will appeal to readers of sci-fi and those who do not.

Hourglass by Myra McEntire
After the death of her parents, seventeen-year-old Emerson Cole is living in a
small southern town with her brother & sister-in-law, trying to get over her
problems.  This includes her ability to see people from the past. She begins
to wonder if there are others with unusual abilities. With help she may have
more control of her life and of events that can change the lives of others.
(Did I mention some of this help just happens to be incredibly good looking?)

Near Witch by Victoria Schwab
Sixteen-year-old Lexi, who lives on an enchanted moor at the edge of the
village of Near, must solve the mystery when, the day after a mysterious boy
appears in town, children start disappearing.
