Tara Melton-Miller will be October’s featured artist at It’s by Nature. The gallery will host an artist demonstration/reception during Sylva After Dark, Friday, October 1st. . Tara will be demonstrating Kumihimo, a form of Japanese braiding done through a wooden stand or stool. She incorporates these multi-textured braids onto handcrafted mixed media backgrounds to showcase them within paintings. Meet the artist from 6-9 PM and learn more about this ancient art form. Musical guest, Robin Whitley. Wine & Cheese will be served.

Annie’s will be doing our bread tasting Friday, October 1 for Sylva After Dark from 5pm to 8pm. We will have our toasted Whole Wheat Walnut bread topped with Annie’s scrumptious Pumpkin Butter. To wash it down, we will be sampling Smoky Mountain Roaster’s Pumpkin Spice coffee.

In conjunction with the national American Craft Week, Jackson County NC craftsmen are hosting the exhibition, “Hand + Craft: A Jackson County Celebration” at Gallery One in Sylva. Sponsored by the Jackson County Arts Council, an opening night event will be held Friday, October 1st from 6 until 9 pm.
James Smythe Studio (563 W. Main St.)
James Smythe is pleased to announce his new, upstairs art studio in the Downtowner Building, 563 West Main Street in downtown Sylva. He has created a ‘salon’ style hallway gallery to display and sell paintings. For the past forty years, James has been a prolific painter of oils, acrylics and pastels using various styles. The paintings currently on display form a retrospective of landscape, portrait and figurative works. Please note that some figure paintings from the 1980s and early 1990s are for mature audiences only.
James was a full professor in the Art Department at Western Carolina University for thirty-one years. He and his wife Sylvia have moved their residence from Webster to his family home in Sylva. He can now walk down the hill to his new studio and gallery.
James and Sylvia are participating in the Sylva After Dark event and invite visitors to drop in 6pm to 8pm on the first Friday night of each month through December for a viewing and possible purchase. The purchase prices are with out a gallery commission, a 50% savings. Now is the perfect time to own a Smythe without inflation.
Papou’s Wine Shop and Bar
Friday October 1st from 6-9 we will have a free tasting for Sylva after dark. It has been a great end of summer and we look forward to a beautiful fall.
The Wilderness Society
The Wilderness Society will host an evening of poetry and art as part of Sylva’s Art after Dark series on Friday, October 1st. The event will run from 6 to 9PM and features the Dreams and Distillations series of Rabun County artist Honor Woodard, and local poets Thomas Rain Crowe and Laurence Holden.
