National Independent Retailers Week is a celebration of the uniqueness of local businesses and a way to encourage shoppers to visit local merchants and see what they have to offer.
As a part of this yearly celebration, the Downtown Sylva Association and its partners will focus on spreading the word about the 3/50 Project. The 3/50 Project is a movement to get shoppers to spend at least $50 each month at 3 different local businesses. The motto of the 3/50 Project is to “save your local economy…three stores at a time.” For every $100 spent in independently owned stores $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.
So come to downtown Sylva and celebrate National Independent Retailers week by visiting your favorite local businesses and even trying new ones.

A Clothesline Art Sale will be held on Saturday, July 24th, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Bridge Park Pavilion. Proceeds from the art sale will benefit the children’s section of the new Jackson County Public Library Complex.
Children are invited to add their artwork to the Clothesline Art Sale. All kid-made artwork needs to be at the pavilion before 10 a.m. on July 24th.
All of the donated art will be displayed along a clothesline and will be for sale to the public. Each piece will have a suggested minimum donation assigned to it.
If children do not already have art to donate, they still have time to create an artistic piece for the sale. They might make use of what they have at home – newspaper, yarn, paper plates, magazines, paper grocery bags, cardboard, etc. Draw, paint, sew, cut or glue upon a surface of their choice. Paintings, drawings, collages and photos are acceptable.
Jackson County citizens and visitors are invited to come to Bridge Park to peruse the lovely works of art, and take one (or more) home for a nominal donation. It is definitely “art with a heart!”
Kid-friendly food and drinks will be for sale during the event. A hands-on art activity will be available for the children during the sale.
Artists are encouraged to stay and enjoy the experience of contributing to their public library in a meaningful way while also having their creative efforts validated.

The Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet is excited to participate again in the “Concerts on the Creek” series on July 23 from 7:00 to 9:00pm.
For this event the Town of Sylva sponsors the Quintet and will reprise “The Petting Zoo” for young and not so young who would like to try out a brass instrument. Students from WCU’s School of Music will be on hand during intermission to entice those who wish to try a trumpet, trombone, french horn, or euphonium. Don’t worry; the students will sterilize mouthpieces between musicians.
SMBQ is pleased to announce a new feature this summer. The Quintet invites brass players of all ages to join them on two selections near the end of the concert. Music for the selections will be online at www.smbq.org, and copies will be made available at the town library. So dust off your instrument cases, polish your instruments, and get ready for the sounds of brass.
Young children dancing in the grass, families picnicking, and everyone enjoying good music is the scene the Quintet expects to re-create. The Quintet will play old favorites as well as arrangements of folk tunes from China performed during their China tour.
Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics and join Brad, Dan, David, Mike, and Travis for a fun-filled evening at the Bridge Park.
Concerts on the Creek takes place Friday night from 7 pm - 9 pm at the Bridge Park Pavilion. Chris Cates and the Master Plan will be performing a free concert.
