The Nichols House Antique Shop Interior Design Tip
Posted September 1st, 2009

Manager, Dottie Hoche, suggests for bringing light and attention to a dark space in a room add polished metal via  brass or silver candlesticks, lamp base, pitcher, vase, planter or anything that shines and reflects. This will perk up a dim spot and cast a reflection on your sense of style.

Bubacz’s Underground Coffee Tip
Posted September 1st, 2009

Do not freeze your coffee. Coffee has oils in it and changes structurally with freezing and also risks freezer burn. For best coffee, store in an airtight container or a container with a one-way valve. Use within one week of grinding or, if longer, refrigerate. For more coffee tips, visit Underground Cafe under Lulu’s on Main St. and at the green awning on Mill St.

Tom Shay’s Strategies to Win in 2010 presentation
Posted September 1st, 2009

The Downtown Sylva Association will host Tom Shay as he presents “Strategies to Win in 2010″ (an survive this economy). This presentation will be open FREE to the public on September 15th from 6:30-8:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Sylva. Refreshments will be served. Tom will also be visiting our neighboring towns of Franklin and Waynesville. This great opportunity will offer an educational, motivating evening that will bring great benefit to our local businesses and community.

Tom Shay’s experiences as a fourth-generation merchant provide him with the knowledge and background to present tried and proven ideas to assist owners, managers, and staff with the day-to-day operation of their businesses. During the 25-plus years that Tom was part of the family business, the stores were ongoing laboratories for the management and promotional techniques that are the backbone of the seminars that Tom now produces.

He presents proven and time-tried ideas on the topics of promoting, customer loyalty, business management design, employee skills development, and financial control.

A native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Tom started his first job working in his grandfather’s general store. Tom moved to Florida to join his parents in the family operation they had purchased in 1971. Over the next 26 years, the Shay family owned and operated three businesses. In 1997, Tom sold the business to devote full time to the development of seminars and writing magazine columns and books.

Tom Shay has authored five books on small business management and co-authored a book on retailer/vendor relations.  During the past 8 years, Tom has written over 300 management articles that have appeared in over 65 national and international trade magazines.

As a speaker, Tom has earned the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) distinction, an honor that has been earned by fewer than 7 percent of speakers worldwide. Feel free to learn more about Tom Shay and his success at www.profitsplus.org.
