4th of July festivities in Jackson County

As you may have heard, there will not be the traditional July 4th festivities in Sylva this year due to the construction on the new library. But there are nine (9) other options! Sylva After Dark - July 3rd from 6:00 - 9:00 pm

Bring the family and enjoy a special summer evening in downtown Sylva! Whatever your Palate (or Wallet!) dictates, you’ll find Sylva’s flourishing restaurant community open and ready to provide the most affordable and delicious meals outside of your home! After dinner, browse through local stores providing everything from music and clothes to art and live music.  Get a taste below of what will be offered this month.

Spring Street Cafe will offer original live music with Eric and Norma Hendrix and Charles Toledo. Eric and Charles will play the guitar with Eric on lead vocals. Norma will play alongside them with the flute.

Heinzelmannchen Brewery: Food & Beer Pairing

Gallery One: Celebrate and enjoy artworks based on the theme “Patriotism and Freedom”! “Although it may be a difficult challenge for visual artists of the area they are up to it,” said Tim Lewis, one of the Artists in Residence at the Gallery. Independence can be seen in terms of freedom and autonomy but also separation. Artists showing their work at Gallery 1 are from Jackson and surrounding counties. Refreshments will be served.

Friends of the Library Bookstore: Pic & Play Dulcimer Group of Sylva will be playing at the Friends of the Library Bookstore Friday evening July 3 from 6:30 - 8:00.  We are mountain lap and hammered dulcimer players who make up an informal group that play old mountain tunes, hymns and some more modern music at charitable events and other small venues.

The Nichols House: Join us for our 20% off sale and Sylva After Dark Bluegrass picking on the front porch. Refreshments will be served.

Yesterday’s Tree: Open for Art after Dark with refreshments. Celebrating America’s Birthday through the month of July with a store wide “Tag Sale”. Varying Colored tags mark discount amounts. Shannon will be traveling to the Gift Market in Atlanta mid-month, be sure to let her know your special item before she leaves and then,  Be on the look-out for all her special finds arriving soon!! Guadalupe Cafe: Local artist and MFA candidate at nearby Western Carolina University, Michael Polomik’s, will have his oil paintings on display through July 15th.

Bubacz’s Underground presents the Abstract Watercolor Art of Audrey Ellington for the July installment of Sylva After Dark.

The wine bar at Papou’s Wine Shop will be featuring a “Red, White and Blue” special for Sylva After Dark. Check out www.downtownsylva.org for more details later this week.

It’s by Nature: Open, serving refreshments and looking forward to serving you, Friday July 3rd Sylva after Dark!

A “sell out” for the Taste of Downtown Sylva

The inaugural Taste of Downtown Sylva was a smashing success! Tickets were sold out before the start of the event and participants thoroughly enjoyed roaming through downtown Sylva sampling the wide range of culinary selections provided by participating businesses.  “Saturday was a wonderful event. There were folks from Waynesville to Bryson City enjoying themselves. It was great meeting new customers and catching up with our regulars. Taste of Downtown Sylva was definitely the best thing that has happened in Sylva in a long time.” says Lisa Wood, owner of Spring Street Cafe. Read the rest of this entry »

Taste of Downtown Sylva

Delight your taste buds in Sylva’s inviting downtown during the first annual Taste of Downtown Sylva event on Saturday, June 13, 2009 from 2pm-5pm.  Sample wonderful treats from twelve merchants and enjoy  what they have to offer.  Cool coffee drinks, spicy salsas, delectable sweets, and more!  Participating merchants include:  Shot in the Dark, Lulu’s on Main, Bubacz’s Underground, Guadalupe Café, Eric’s Fresh Fish Market, Bill’s Back St. Take-Out, Spring St. Café, Restaurant 553, Ironstone Grill, Heinzelmannchen Brewery, and Annie’s Naturally Bakery.

Farmers Market kicks off the season

Check out the first Farmers Market of the season this Saturday, May 2nd from 9 - noon in the
municipal parking lot, next to Bridge Park. The Farmers Market will be open rain or shine each Saturday morning from May through the end of October.
